Based when Cathedral College inside 1925, Gannon University is the oldest of trio universities within Erie, Pennsylvania. A title of the college was changed to Gannon College, around honor of John Mark Gannon, Archbishop of Erie, in 1933. A college was tons male until a mid-1960s when a number one women began ingesting classes at a school while attending Gannon's tons-female counterpart, Villa Maria College. Under a leadership of President Joseph Scottino, the college was granted university status inside 1979. When Gannon University, a school has continued to develop. Within 1989, Gannon officially merged with Villa Maria College. Villa was absorbed into a University & a school of nursing retained a title "Villa Maria School of Nursing". Connected sustaining a Diocese of Erie, Gannon University has an alumni base numbering as much as 27,000. Todays enrollment is 3,500.
